Region

Diverse

The cities of Krefeld and Mönchengladbach as well as the Districts of Kleve, Viersen, Wesel and the Rhein-Kreis Neuss shape the Niederrhein Region. This important economic region west of the Rhine combines urban and natural landscapes, multimodal infrastructure and innovative industries.

Niederrhein Region

Located in the far west of North Rhine-Westphalia, directly adjacent to the Netherlands, the Niederrhein Region is at the heart of Europe. However, it is far more than just its favorable location in the Rhineland metropolitan region with around 8.5 million people that makes the Niederrhein Region an attractive location for companies, investors and project developers. It is also the innovative companies with a global reputation spread across many sectors, the multimodal infrastructure with access to the Rhine and the mix of urbanity and nature with a high quality of life. Characteristic sectors in the Lower Rhine region are chemicals, mechanical engineering, logistics, energy, agribusiness, electrical engineering, textiles and clothing as well as tourism. Vibrant industry networks along the value chains and close links to a diverse university landscape keep the innovation engines running. One of the many positive consequences: The export rate is over 50 percent, and goods and products from the Lower Rhine can be found on all five continents.

more about us

District of Kleve

Would you like to work where more and more people are spending their free time and holidays? Would you like to live in lush, rural surroundings with your family, or get away from built-up areas? Is it important to you that the economic conditions help you feel that you’ve made the right decision? Then let us welcome you warmly to the District of Kleve.

Nestled in the distinctive landscape of the Lower Rhine, the District of Kleve is only 130 kilometres from the “Randstad“ area encompassing Amsterdam/Rotterdam. The industrial conurbations between Duisburg and Cologne/Bonn are just a stone’s throw away. This idyllic location in the European Single Market offers ideal prospects for entrepreneurial investment and plenty of commercial sites. Another highlight is the broad area around the airport in Weeze, which is currently once more “on the up“.

The continually growing container terminal in Emmerich am Rhein with shuttle transfers to Rotterdam and three international Autobahns are the mainstays of the District of Kleve, making it a hub and lynchpin for the largest markets in Europe. Much appreciated by well-known brands and market leaders! Compelling evidence of the remarkable infrastructure is the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule Rhein-Waal). Over 6,500 students here are carrying the hopes of the local economy and will become the “skilled workers of tomorrow“.

Mönchengladbach

With more than 275,000 inhabitants, Mönchengladbach is the largest city on the Lower Rhine. The catchment area includes around 15 million people within a radius of 100 kilometres. Mönchengladbach's positive overall and economic development is supported by its dynamism and strength as a real-estate location. This development is reflected, for example, in the relocation of the SMS group headquarters to Mönchengladbach, the further development of the premium Nordpark Business Park, the development of Regiopark into one of the top locations for e-commerce in Germany, in the form of MINTO as a shopping center of supra-regional importance and plans for a knowledge and innovation campus as an incubator for interdisciplinary and new developments in the immediate vicinity of the university of applied sciences. Mönchengladbach Airport (MGL) serves as an innovation driver for the city, e.g. by means of various research projects around drones, air cabs and new, sustainable propulsion systems in aviation. With around 800 jobs, MGL is also an important economic driver.

In all developments, the city takes current trends and challenges, like social stability, the changeover to a knowledge-based society, climate protection and demographic stability, into account. With new residential areas like Seestadt or the Maria Hilf Terrassen, Mönchengladbach is investing in diversity and creating residential opportunities for a very wide range of groups. As areas with low numbers of cars and innovative solutions when it comes to energy supply, the developments are also contributing to the city’s environmental goals.

Krefeld

Krefeld is located at the intersection of the most influential European economic and growth belts along the Rhine and the west-east axis that links the major European cities. Düsseldorf Airport, Germany’s third largest airport, is only 20 minutes away via the A 44 and A 57 Autobahns. The global ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp can be reached by ship from the Rhine port of Krefeld in just one day. Because of its vicinity to the state capital Düsseldorf, the city offers excellent conditions for domestic and multinational companies alike.

Krefeld is a family-friendly city and a great place to live. Krefeld boasts an excellent standard of living; the city stands out thanks to its numerous green spaces and parks, a broad choice of cultural and leisure activities and a wide range of education options. In terms of urban development, Krefeld – with its rich heritage of Bauhaus architecture – has the ambition to combine architectural quality with aspects of sustainable and healthy construction for urban projects and building projects headed up by private investors and developers.

District of Viersen

Pulsating life, intact nature: That’s the District of Viersen. Located in the heart of Europe, just outside the city of Düsseldorf, it is home to about 300,000 people. With a strong economy in an attractive, eventful region with a lot of culture and high recreational value. The purchasing power index is 100.8; and trade tax rates, land and property prices are moderate.

The District of Viersen has excellent transport links with four Autobahns, trains to the Ruhr Area and the Benelux countries, Düsseldorf International Airport and the ports on the Rhine and the Maas. The economy is made up of a balanced mix of sectors, and the university network is very well developed.

District of Wesel

The outstanding location, including from a European perspective, at the interface between the metropolises of the Rhineland and Ruhr Area and close to the Benelux countries, is a great reason for investors to get involved in the District of Wesel.

Furthermore, the location boasts new spaces, moderate property prices and an excellent knowledge and education landscape in the Niederrhein Region. In addition, this charming area with lots of nature and opportunities for adventure ensures that “working and living in the countryside” can become reality here. The large cities on the Rhine and in the Ruhr Area also offer an urban environment with a very diverse lifestyle.

As such, the District of Wesel has a lot going for it, which is clearly underscored by the significant dynamic interest in the property market here. Sales of commercial properties and existing commercial buildings are very fast-paced. As such, important business developments have been created in recent times. The residential market is lively too. The former coal mine sites have been used to create new residential areas, which are particularly commendable when it comes to healthy, sustainable living. In Dinslaken-Lohberg, the high energy efficiency levels of the new buildings have made it possible to supply the commercial zone and residential area completely from renewable energies.
And there is still room for new ideas in the District of Wesel. The following projects give you a brief overview of the kinds of things that are possible. The District of Wesel also has lots to offer in the future. Let’s talk about that!

Rhein-Kreis Neuss

Seven towns and one municipality cover an area of 576.42 km² and form a strong community with around 459,000 inhabitants. Measured in terms of gross domestic product per capita, the Rhein-Kreis Neuss has been the strongest economic district in North Rhine-Westphalia for years, even taking first place in national and federal comparisons.

More than 29,000 companies, including world-renowned corporations, are established here. The international orientation of the economy, the attractive potential in terms of qualified employees and an excellent logistical infrastructure are just a few reasons why companies value the Rhein-Kreis Neuss. Neuss-Düsseldorf harbour in particular is an important hub for the worldwide distribution of goods and commodities. Alongside good preconditions for businesses, the Rhein-Kreis Neuss is also an attractive place to live and work, with numerous leisure and cultural opportunities.

The Rhein-Kreis Neuss offers a balanced mix of industries and is a location of Europe-wide importance for the energy and logistics industry, aluminium processing, the healthcare sector, the food and beverage industry and the chemical industry. The district also contributes its innovative power to the development of new technologies.

The Niederrhein Region is sprouting and flourishing more than ever thanks to its un- mistakable nature and ideal location conditions.

With an area of 435 km², the Schwalm-Nette Nature Park is considered one of the largest nature reserves in North Rhine-Westphalia, extending all the way into the Netherlands. This boundless stretch of nature, which is sporadically interspersed with beautiful towns, is what makes the Lower Rhine so charming and characterises the Niederrhein Region as an exceptional location worth living in.

The two major airports Düsseldorf Airport (DUS) and Cologne/ Bonn (CGN) are among the top ten airports in Germany. There is a wide range of industrial and business land available in the Niederrhein Region.
